In general, the Mobile Mapping System (MMS) has been built by integrating many sensors. The most frequently used sensors are
digital cameras and GNSS receivers. One of the most available and low-cost cameras in the electronics market is an action camera
(ActionCam). Unfortunately, the ActionCam standard lacks geometric accuracy. This paper deals with innovation for improving the
ActionCam to be able to be used for a handheld mobile mapping system. There are two main improvements have been made to the
ActionCam, which are (1) geometric improvement by replacing the fisheyes lens, and (2) positioning improvement by adding the GPS
– RTK (Global Positioning System-Realtime Kinematic) receiver for geotagging. The ActionCam records imagery in 4K video format
mode. Meanwhile, the GPS-NTRP RTK (Networked Transport of RTCM via Internet Protocol Realtime Kinematic) is used for recording
camera exposure position. Furthermore, the video frames are extracted from 4K video recording, and the GPS NMEA data is used for
geotagging video frames. The next process is videogrammetry using the SFM (structure from motion) algorithm to calculate the
orientation of the video frame. The next step is 3D measurement for finding the coordinate and the dimensioning on the object.
Testing of geometric quality is carried out in 2 ways, which are (1) testing the position of the object, and (2) testing the dimensions of
the object. Both test results provide deviations at the centimeter level (below 5cm). It can be concluded that the increase in the quality
of the action camera has the potential to be used as a handheld mobile mapping system.
